Bali's beaches offer a range of accommodation choices and top class tourist amenities

The captivating allure of Bali attracts millions of visitors every year. The island is a colourful swirl of culture, nature, spirituality and art, with an assortment of attractions to satisfy any traveller. However, the prospect of winding down on one of the island’s enchanting beaches, sipping on a fresh fruit shake and simply taking in the tropical atmosphere is a frequent fantasy shared my many visitors.

A choice of beaches adorn the island’s coastline, each of which has its own unique appeal to visitors in search of that prime holiday location. In fact, when it come to character, facilities and attractions, Bali’s beaches offer visitors impressive variety, from the typical turquoise fringed ivory sand beaches of the south, to the impressive cliff-guarded black sand beaches of the north and west.

Kuta is Bali’s central bustling beach resort location, and has actually extended into the neighbouring resort areas of Tuban, Seminyak and Legian. Once a quaint fishing village, the entire area has now been transformed into a busing tourist town by the constant influx of visitors to the island. It is also now the site of numerous hotels, private villas, dining and shopping options. The recently constructed Kuta Beachwalk is proving a big hit with visitors. The architecture is designed to imitate a paddy field, and the mall provides a refreshing break from the heat for those who want some respite from the sun.

Legian, the Balinese word for “sweet”, and is also a popular Bali beach destination. Like Kuta, it is situated on the south western side of the island and only a short drive from the airport. Legian is a big hit with surfers, and has also become famous for its vibrant nightlife.

For visitors who enjoy the facilities on offer in Kuta, but want to steer clear of the crowds, Lovina Beach is an ideal destination. Numerous activities are on offer, including snorkelling and diving. It also provides an excellent vantage point for visitors who enjoy stunning romantic sunsets.

Nusa Dua, which means two islands, is an enclave of top class resorts and villas fronting a calm bay to the southeast of Bali, while if your idea of heaven involves some early morning yoga as you watch the sun rise from Bali’s peaceful shores, Sanur is the beach for you. A short distance from the island's busy capital, Denpansar, this sugar white beach was one of the first Bali beaches to be developed on the island, and is also the site of numerous impressive ancient temples.

The black volcanic beaches on the west coast of Bali are also well worth exploring, and boast impressive waves that attract surfers from all over the world. For those keen to sit out of the surf action and soak up some sun, many of the black sand beaches maintain their remote tropical feel and are fringed with swaying palm trees. Balian and Medewi are popular Bali beach destinations on this coast, where it is also possible to indulge in some of the best freshly caught seafood available on the island.
