Langkawi Beaches

Sand fringed lagoons and longer stretches of coastal splendour

The beaches in Langkawi are known as some of the best in South East Asia. Sand fringed lagoons and longer stretches of coastal splendour draw tourists from around the globe to this tropical idyll just south of the Thai border. Langkawi’s most developed beach is Pantai Cenang, which is still relatively quiet and unspoilt when compared to those in larger destinations, its stunning shoreline an idyllic blend of azure seas and powdery white sand. Although still served by a range of local-style accommodation and dining choices, Pantai Cenang is also rapidly moving upmarket and the beach now attracts a wide cross-section of the global holidaymakers who gather to enjoy the peace and beautiful surroundings, drifting between the beach and the main road that backs it to enjoy good food, refreshments an and shopping opportunities. A wide choice of restaurants along the strip serve a good selection of local dishes, as well as fresh seafood, western cuisine.

Pantai Tengah is actually an extension of Pantai Cenang and the longest stretch of sand on the island Langkawi and particularly popular with families. Elsewhere on Langkawi, Tanjung Rhu boasts one of the island's finest sandy shores with cerulean waters and powder-fine sand backed by verdant tropical forest and protected by large limestone outcroppings. Tanjung Rhu is one of the most awe inspiring, unspoilt beaches in the region, a true poster child for Asian beach retreats. A handful of roadside shacks offer visitors a taste of the island's favourite noodles, but there's little else to spoil the oceanfront serenity.
